I’ve had a lot of time to think about the new Sailor Moon anime. With all the delays in the project, us fans have had time to simmer and ponder while we drool over and play with all the shiny new merchandise. I came up with a little list of some things I really hope will translate into the new series if they truly base it on the manga. Feel free to add yours!

Warning: post contains manga spoilers! All images from Miss Dream.

1. More detailed and shiny items.

image

Naoko had some detailed ideas in mind for the animated versions of the sailor soldiers. The animators at the time probably thought she was insane to want all that detail. But with digital animation, it will be easier for the costumes to be more elaborate than they were in the original. I expect Jupiter and Venus to get their belts, Moon to have more detailed accessories, and the general over all designs to be much more interesting. Even taking a peek at the new Japanese manga release, the brooches are very shiny and faceted. All very visually exciting!!

2. Venus being a badass leader.

image

I feel like all the sailor soldiers are a little more excellent in the manga, but Venus is particularly rad. She really is the leader of the inner senshi and she stands strong in this role. Speaking of items, seeing the Holy Sword animated is going to be great. It was in the musical so I assume they plan to include it in the anime, too. One thing I missed in the myu was Sailor Venus taking Queen Beryl to task with this mighty sword. Bam, right in the gut. Take that you heartbroken psycho.  I hope we see this in action.

3. Speaking of action, there’s more physicality in the manga fights.

image

There’s some serious fighting in the manga: kicking, punching, throwing people. It’s more in your face and aggressive. Sure there’s magical attacks, but the actual fighting aspects are much more frequently employed than they were in the original anime. Especially with characters like Sailor Jupiter, I could really stand to see more of this.

4. More blood.

image

Also, sometimes you get hurt fighting bad guys. We got a little bit of actual injuries in the original anime, but the manga is quite a bit bloodier in many places. I don’t need gore and gruesome injuries, but a slightly more realistic take on what it means to these girls to be fighting like this would be excellent.

5. More varied attacks with cooler and maybe varied animation.

image

Kicking and punching is cool, but magical attacks are really suitable for animated media. With new animation styles, we are likely to see more attacks from the sailor soldiers, including some from the manga that we haven’t seen animated before. Jupiter Coconut Cyclone, anyone?  I’m hoping for attack sequences that aren’t just the same every time. It will be really cool to see their powers expanded!

6. More depth for these bros.

image

Okay, I’m cheating a little here. These guys didn’t get a ton of extra development in the manga compared to the original anime, but they did get a lot of attention in the new musical. I’m kind of hoping Naoko’s apparent love for these guys spills over into the new anime. It created a really interesting dynamic and also brought some depth into the past life that we didn’t really have before.

7. More subtle hints at characters’ emotions and unfulfilled feelings.

image

I’m such a sucker for the hinted at feelings between a few characters in the manga, most particularly this super sad and heartbreaking moment when Sailor Pluto dies and just falls apart emotionally while talking to the King. Her potential feelings for him, which obviously could never be acted upon (right? RIGHT!?) are also hinted at in past musicals. I’d love to see more of this kind of thing in the new anime. Just pull the crap out of my heartstrings.

8. Getting to see Haruka in both her female and male outfits.

image

In the manga, Haruka’s gender is stated to be both male and female and she’s shown pretty equally in each light. She gets a little exposure looking feminine in the original anime, but I’m hoping the new anime lets us see more of a balance. Speaking of gender and sexuality, I do hope to see a little less boy chasing from the other sailor soldiers, too. I’m thinking of that scene in the manga where Sailor Mars leans on Venus and mentions how they don’t need men.  Sexuality plays a pretty strong role in the manga, and in Naoko’s universe there’s more to it than just teen girls chasing after guys.

9. Cyborg Hotaru.

image

Not much to say about this one other than yes, please.

10. Some fun staples of the original anime are actually from the manga so I hope we see them again!

image

I loved the Palla Palla age swap situation. In the manga, it serves from some great moments for both Chibiusa and Usagi as they cope with their desires and fears and deal with their developing relationship.  It will be nice if we can keep these sometimes funny moments that also have serious and thoughtful character development in mind.

11. More human cats!

image

I will be the first to admit that I’m not a huge fan of Artemis’ human design. Not sure what’s going on there. :P But it would be nice to see the cats in their human forms.

12. Speaking of characters that I’d like to see animated…

image

There’s a lot of characters in the manga that don’t appear in the original anime! A lot of them are in the later arcs and who knows if the anime will get that far, but it would be cool to see some of these characters I love in motion. I didn’t even picture them all here, there’s just so many. The Stars arc moves really quickly, so it’s possible that some of these characters would have very little screen time. Still, seeing them in motion even just a little would be really exciting!

13. More of this lady.

image

Let’s be honest, we all know Sailor Saturn got shafted in the anime. It would be great to see some more of her in the new series if we make it that far. You know, giving her an actual transformation sequence would be super rad and getting to see more of her attacks would be fantastic!

14. And finally, Chibi Chibi returned to her original role.

image

The Stars anime differs pretty greatly from the Stars arc of the manga. It would be very cool to see the story animated as Naoko’s original intended. Not to mention getting to see a fully animated Sailor Cosmos, in all her glorious mystery, would be fan-freakin-tastic. I can only imagine all the rainbows and shiny. Glorious.

So that’s it! I’m sure there’s a TON more and who knows how far the anime will actually go. But here’s hoping that when we do FINALLY get it, it will be super well worth our patience.

IN THE NAME OF THE MOON, HAPPY WAITING. xD

Many of these items are a real possibility now that we know the director of the new anime. Munehisa Sakai was director in many One Piece episodes and som movies, Dragon Ball movies… but most importantly: SUITE PRETTY CURE

Suite is the precure season where fans can find a lot of references an parallels with Sailor Moon, starting with Mitsuishi Kotono playing the cat fairy Hummy.

Talking about cats, Suite has a cat that can transforms into a human: Seiren. Seiren started as one of the bad guys and became one of the cures in the Suite team. Fits with number 11…

image

Also, this is a season where the cures get real injuries. And I think there is no need to say that Precure is a series with badass magical girls that fight like they went out from a Dragon Ball anime… so I don’t know about real blood, but injuries and phisicality… yes. Number 3 and 4.

Bonus 1: Masked ans misterious Cure that reminds me of Tuxedo and Sailor V.

image

Number 6 is a piece of cake! Suite was the season with the biggest number of attacks. One of the things that was amazing on this season was seeing the new attacks… and I must say they were all gorgeous. Here is a playlist on youtube with all the attacks.

For number 7, Suite was also full of subtle hints… HibiKana is a pretty popular ship in the fandom (and some even argue it’s canon).

image image

For the rest it’s mainly due to the sucess of the first season and to the scrip supervisor who will set the base for the plot.

Suite had some problems with the script after the tsunami, but the director’s work was still pretty amazing…

Bonus 2: Munehisa Sakai and Yuuji Kobayashi worked together on episode 41 of Smile Precure. I must say is one of my favorite episodes from that season… here is a clip for you to see

ps.: I must add that Suite has a loooot of fillers, but almost all of them added something new and a little important to the story. I think I was never bored watching the fillers…

This is definitely an interesting read ^^

The comment about suite is mine, I’ve made it on my personal tumblr and I’ll reblog here for any Sailor Moon fan who would like to read it.
Maybe I should write a whole thesis on why having this two professionals who worked on precure is a very good sign on what we might get for the new Sailor Moon anime…
