This is an important issue that needs to be addressed.

Please artists reblog this. Recognition, reblogs/retweets/etc, and commentary is so so so much more difficult to come by as a fic writer than as an fan artist.

Not to mention it is considerably harder to make money from fanfiction and it gets even more dangerous from a copywrite infringement standpoint.

If you want to take support of your writer friends even a step further - collaborate with them. Illustrate or draw for their fics. I have personally experienced how much of a difference in exposure it can make to have that attention-grabbing picture, and then a fic link.
