jaspurr:

damn the hatred for corporate twitters really escalated quickly

for years it’s been like “yeah they are pretty much ads made by either interns or underpaid workers because people higher up want to take advantage of social media but have no idea how it works.”

and then like a month ago people started spamming “you are not immune to propaganda” under any and all corporate twitter post and making think pieces about how it’s an ultra insideous form of advertisement

now today I saw a post that said that “saying interns run the social media accounts was probably just evil propaganda to further humanize the brand, there’s no way they would give such an important job to lowly interns” followed by another post saying millennials who work on social media pages for brands are “class traitors”.

like within the last couple months we went from “remember that these twitters are advertisements, and that these brands aren’t actually people” to “the real life human beings who run these accounts, either as a job or an imternship at the company, are not people”. and it’s uh… kinda alarming?

like god damn I know capitalism is shit and it’s destroying the planet and everything on it but there is perhaps, a middle ground here that doesn’t lead straight to dehumanizing people and trying to justify your increasing levels of hostility towards them?

idk it just gives me the same vibes as “shoplifting is activism because the brand is evil” when all you’re doing is harming the retail workers. like the ceo isn’t running the twitter account and I highly doubt that they would give a shit if you treated their twitter like garbage because just generating attention towards the brand is an ad, but you are probably making some employee’s (or several employees) day shitty. and saying that isn’t trying to “humanize the brand” it’s saying you can just fucking ignore an ad instead of going out of your way to treat an actual human being like they are the personification of the brand.
