on one hand being critical of the media we consume and create is good but on the other when someone says something is problematic in the back of my mind im always going ‘is it problematic because this thing holds no merit from an objective viewpoint or is it problematic because you don’t like it and you actively looked for something to justify why other people can’t like it either"
the distinction is hard to make sometimes but it genuinely feels like people who fall into the latter category are willing to make concessions for the things they like, but its unforgivable when people do the same for things they don’t. if you log onto the online and spend all your time arguing about why x is bad, but if i were to spend as much time doing the same thing for y thing you like, you’re suddenly on the other end of the equation, and anyone with enough time and influence could tip the scale. again, there is absolutely merit to being critical of media, but it turns out if you go to an upper level english class, raise your hand, go ‘um this book we’re reading is bad’ the only answer you’d get in response is ‘yeah….that’s why we’re reading it.’
