This card is amazing on many levels but I think people are missing the context to this particular scene, which makes this card even better. I must share!
Futaba is the cat, called Puss, in the fairy tale Puss in Boots. And this card is depicting a specific scene in the tale. The very short version of the story is about the youngest son of a miller family who gets a cat as his inheritance. That seems lame at first but surprise its a magical cat who asks for a pair of boots, and then the cat proceeds to get the youngest son very wealthy and laid. It’s a short tale but in case you don’t feel like reading heres the relevant scene:
“One day, the king decides to take a drive with his daughter. The cat persuades his master to remove his clothes and enter the river which their carriage passes. The cat disposes of his master’s clothing beneath a rock. As the royal coach nears, the cat begins calling for help in great distress. When the king stops to investigate, the cat tells him that his master the Marquis has been bathing in the river and robbed of his clothing. The king has the young man brought from the river, dressed in a splendid suit of clothes, and seated in the coach with his daughter, who falls in love with him at once.“
So, Claudine here is the youngest son (or daughter in this case) and Maya is the princess! The sack by Futaba contains the clothing, Claudine’s in this case lol. I imagine Futaba would have to yeet/push Claudine into the water first to get her to go with this plan lol. Hey it worked! ouo
